Database Administrator - Remote
Our client is looking for a database specialist to help them grow and improve their systems. They are currently running on Oracle hosted on AWS (RDS) but will be moving to PostgreSQL. The company is also looking to expand their system to many more services and many more databases.
Looking after the production Oracle databases (for approximately the first 12 months)
Helping with the migration from Oracle to PostgreSQL with minimum downtime
Looking after the production PostgreSQL databases
Working in a DevOps environment and being actively involved in the software development process
Working to improve and automate testing, deployment and monitoring processes
Understanding how the company’s processes work and how that translates into the data they have
Working with business managers to extract required data/reports
Diagnosing and helping fix production issues
Being available to help fix things out of hours (hopefully very infrequently)
Not being phased by the strange variety of things that need doing in a small growing company
Being proactive and not just waiting to be told the next thing to do
Finding better ways that we can get things done
At least 5 years’ experience administering Oracle databases – installation, configuration, backups, monitoring etc.
Excellent PL/SQL coding experience
A good knowledge of SQL performance tuning
Experience of migrating production databases while minimizing downtime
Some experience in Linux server administration
At least a little experience in PostgreSQL with the desire to learn more
A proactive approach to improving databases as part of a DevOps culture
The ability to turn business questions into well-performing database queries
Good interpersonal skills and a great team attitude
The ability to quickly learn new things and adapt
Familiarity with administration of PostgreSQL databases
Familiarity with PAAS environments such as AWS
Experience using automated configuration/deployment tools such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible or Docker
Experience of migrating schemas, data and PL/SQL from Oracle to PostgreSQL
Experience of system security at network, OS and database level
