HINTS AND TIPS – REMOTE INTERVIEWS

As Jobs Factor advertises vacancies all over the world you may be asked to carry out your first interview using Skype (or similar).  Whilst we all may use Skype for social purposes it is slightly different when you are trying to connect in a more meaningful way with your interviewer than a standard phone interview.

Below are some very simple tips which should help you on your way.

BEFOREHAND

  •  You need to give your interview the time and respect it deserves. Try not to have any distractions.
  • Set up your device (laptop, computer, tablet) somewhere comfortable but also clean and professional. Make sure there isn’t too much clutter in the background to distract the interviewer.
  • Check the alignment of your camera and screen too – you need to make sure you have eye contact with the interviewer.
  • As with a regular interview, you need to think about what to wear. Been dressed professionally might make you feel the part. Dressing down may be risky!
  • Ask a friend or family member to do a trial run to ensure you are familiar with how Skype (or similar) works.
  • Use a professional username.
  • Make sure you know the industry the company, clients or stakeholders deal with.
  • Make sure you know the job description in detail and this of specific examples of what makes you suitable for the job.
  • Make a list of your key skills and weaknesses. Think about how you would answer questions for each.
  • Have a Plan B – there is always the potential for technical issues. Make sure you know who is making the call and sign in early.
  • If you can’t fix any technical issues be honest. Suggest rearranging the call or use a phone for the audio.

 INTERVIEW ITSELF

  • Set up your Skype area before the interview and ensure you have full signal and battery!
  • Have your notes to hand and your CV so you don’t have to run out of shot to refer to them.
  • Try to develop a rapport with the interviewer as quickly as possible. Make lots of eye contact, smile and sit up straight.  Roll your shoulders back and down so that you have good posture, open your chest and speak clearly.
  • Think about the questions you are being asked before answering ensuring that you answer clearly in order for everything to be understood.
  • Take a deep breath before you answer – this will calm your nerves. With audio and video channels, it is harder to read body language, so the tone of your voice is important.
  • Wait for the interviewer to stop talking before responding.
  • Have a pen and paper to hand to take any notes.
  • At the end of the call thank the interviewer for their time and if you don’t know ask what the next steps of the process are.

 FOLLOW UP

  • Send a follow up either email or LinkedIn (if you are connected) to the interviewer and thank them for their time and you look forward to hearing from them
